James’ challenges prevent him from living fully independently without immediate supervision. These accessibility solutions allow James to live with dignity and more independently in his family home. Living within his own living space gives him the opportunity to practice self-care skills, which benefit his social inclusion capabilities and provide the family with a bit more privacy.
By improving the Bathroom, James has his own full, three-piece bathroom. His old bathroom was a two-piece, sink and toilet, combined with the family washer and dryer.
By improving the Kitchen, James is be able to learn food care and cooking skills to prepare some of his own meals, and expand his self-reliance and self-regulation capabilities.
James has a large Lego and modelling clay collection that was stored in several large Rubbermaid containers and were very difficult to access. The solution to this challenge was to increase his kitchen / work-area storage. This allows him once again to enjoy these and other activities without interfering with the meal preparation and cooking that will also take place in this room. It also allows him to work more effectively with others to broaden his social and self advocacy skills and interaction with others by preparing meals, clay modeling and Lego building.
This creative environment acts as a catalyst for James to build and maintain social interaction and resulting positive relationships.
The final goal of the project was to deliver high quality, customized accessibility solutions within a very specific project budget.
